<image:title>Blog - Push some boundaries and maybe even break a few rules. It’s ok, you are learning</image:title>
<image:caption>To an unindoctrinated spectator, roller derby may look like nothing more that uncoordinated mayhem. But in reality, it is a sport governed by many rules. These rules are primarily in place to ensure safety and fairness in gameplay for all skaters. All skaters have to take and pass a test of the rules before they are allowed to play competitively. Generally, for the ten skaters playing, 7 referees are on track at any one time to enforce the rules and their whistles signaling penalty-worthy violations are commonplace. If you are called out for a rule violation, it gets you a one-way ticket to the penalty box for 30 seconds to contemplate your transgression.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Before (left) and after (right) shot of a time I (far right side of each image, black shirt with my butt sticking out and my side meat wide open for a hit) was not in position with my line and alone at the start of a jam at one of my first scrimmages. The opposing jammer (Dingleberry, who also happened to be my Morgantown Roller Vixens Captain; red shirt with a red helmet cover) was lined up right behind me. The after shot is my recovering from being completely laid out by Dingle. I definitely had it coming but at least I fell small. (Photo credit Don Chiurazzi aka Mr. Fancy).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Brains and Bruises: An Introduction - Now what if I told you that in addition to all these things, for me, scientific success came with a helmet and a pair of roller skates? I predict that most folks would be surprised and I will readily admit that I never expected my derby journey to take me this far or to have such a big impact on my professional life. And yet, 10 years after I attended my first roller derby bout as a graduate student, here we are.</image:title>
